Online dating, at your pace

Make room for a date.
Keep your boundaries.

Online dating starts with a conversation, but a first meeting also needs a practical plan. Set a comfortable budget, describe yourself honestly, and leave space to decide how you feel.

Plan your first-date budget

First-date budget calculator

Estimate your own costs before suggesting a place. Enter food, return travel, an activity, and spare money for changes. Include taxes and tips in the relevant amount. Use the same currency throughout; the calculator does not convert currencies.

Enable JavaScript to calculate your budget.

Method: total = food + travel + activity + spare money. Remaining = limit − total. Enter amounts from 0 to 100,000 with at most two decimal places. These are input limits, not spending recommendations. The tool uses whole cents for arithmetic. Your entries stay in this page; the tool sends no requests and saves no entries.

Example only: 12 for food + 8 for travel + 5 for an activity + 5 spare = 30. A limit of 40 leaves 10. These are invented planning amounts, not local prices or survey findings. Replace them with your own estimates.

Keep spending separate from pressure

Agree on the activity before booking anything. Ask how you will divide shared costs instead of assuming the other person will pay. If you cover their meal, include it in your food amount. Keep your return travel in the plan even when someone offers a ride. A lower total is useful only when the plan still suits you.

FTC romance scam figures for 2022: nearly 70,000 people reported a scam, total reported losses were $1.3 billion, and median reported loss was $4,400.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC), February 2023: these figures describe 2022 reports, not every romance scam. Dollar amounts are USD. The median is the middle reported loss, not the average.

Build a profile that gives someone a starting point

Describe an ordinary day

Try a concrete interest instead of a long list of adjectives. “I enjoy quiet bookshops and learning to cook lentil dishes” gives someone a topic to ask about. State what kind of connection you want in your own words. Treat this as a writing exercise, not a formula for getting matches.

Choose a current photo that represents you. Before posting, check the background for an address, a workplace badge, or personal documents. Leave out details you would not want a stranger to know. You can share more later if you choose.

Make a message easy to answer

Refer to something the person chose to share. If their profile mentions cooking, ask what they enjoy making lately. Avoid guessing their personality from a photograph. Keep the question open enough for a real answer, and offer something about yourself in return.

Do not treat a delayed reply as a puzzle you must solve. Let the other person choose whether to continue. If your goals differ, a polite goodbye is enough. You do not need to bargain for attention or explain every boundary.

Keep money requests out of the conversation

The FTC’s 2023 guidance describes romance scammers who invent emergencies, offer investment help, or demand fees for a supposed package. The same guidance recommends talking with someone you trust and checking profile pictures with a reverse image search.

For a first meeting, consider a public place and arrange your own way home. Tell a trusted person your plan. Leave if you feel uncomfortable. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee of safety. No budget result or profile photograph proves someone is trustworthy.
